The need to talk to someone

The need to talk to someone
September 5, 2013 Rev. Gabrielle Orr

A Conversation is usually not just a means to an end. Having a good conversation with your friends, family members or partner helps us to communicate, solve problems, and also meets one of our most important emotional needs  — to share our true being with another. This also includes that you learn to meet this need for someone else. The way you communicate with each other is very important. When your suffer from conversational neglect you start to feel lonely and unappreciated, which causes other problems to arise.  It is very important for us to have someone in our life we can really talk to.

Here are some helpful guidelines to consider when we are having a conversation.

–  Don’t interrupt or try talking over each other. Make sure that you both have a chance to finish a thought before the other person responds.

–  Give each other undivided attention. Some people feel that they can do several things at once, so while talking to you, they try to do something else too. But you can’t have an intimate conversation when you divide your attention. It leaves the other person feeling that he/she is not important enough for your full attention, or that other tasks are more important. If you find it difficult to talk to someone with your undivided attention, it could be that you have allowed competing activities (like television, cellphone) to interfere . There’s nothing quite as frustrating as trying to talk to someone whose mind is somewhere else.

–   Try to develop an interest in each others topics. Topics drive most conversations. We usually talk about something and this something keeps your conversation going. But we all like to talk about some topics more than others.

Please remember that a good conversation is an exchange of energy between two or more people. I believe that we are here to develop meaningful relationships and all relationships start with good conversations. Also you will notice that a positive and balanced exchange of ideas, experiences and point of views will leave you feeling recharged and stimulated, ready to handle the tasks of life with a refreshed mind and attitude.

There is hardly anything better in life than having a wonderful conversation with a good friend. So chat away.
