Why do people get angry?

Why do people get angry?
November 7, 2013 Rev. Gabrielle Orr

Frequently, I come across a client who is extremely angry. Even though most of us experience anger from time to time, I thought it would be beneficial to take a closer look at this subject. How much self-control do we really have? Why do moods vary so much between people or sometimes even from one day to another day for the same person? Understanding the origin of ones anger is an important step to living a peaceful and loving life. Anger is an internal reaction to an external cause. When people get angry, they are often not aware of it’s real reason. There always seems to be something that the person perceived as “not right” that triggered their anger. There is always a good excuse to blame outer circumstances.

When People get angry it can be for two reasons, internal or external. Regardless of which of these two sources apply, the actual emotion itself tends to have its roots anchored somewhere else in this persons life. For example, a woman who was brought up in an abusive home may become, as a form of self-protection, angry and frightened as soon as she hears somebody get verbally loud. A man who grew up in a household with money issues creates a frustration over money in his life today and may simply get angry when a friend asks for a cigarette.

The “Course in Miracles” says that you are never upset for the reason you think you are. The idea of this statement is that as soon as you notice yourself getting upset,  you say to yourself:

“I am never upset for the reason I think”!

This idea applies to other emotions like fear, worry, depression, anxiety, anger, hatred and jealousy as well. Examine your mind and emotions for whatever is really distressing you.

Applying this exercise will help you to keep your energy centered and allow you to work on the real issue you are facing. Once you become aware of the root for your problems and issues you will be able to sooth yourself with acceptance, forgiveness and love, rather than getting lost in some low vibrational emotions like anger, shame and fear.

After all, “there are no small upsets”. They are all equally disturbing to your peace of mind and you deserve to live in joy, happiness and peace.
