This year planet Earth is experiencing a Mars Retrograde which will mostly occur in the sign of Scorpio. What does this mean for us humans? It’s important to understand that this is a cycle which effects all of Earth; however Scorpios may feel this more strongly than others. I also like to point out that the planets are not doing anything to us; rather they are currents that are unfolding. It is our choice to swim with these cycles or struggle upstream. I believe the purpose of Astrology is to enhance our free will choices not dictate them.
To better understand this Mars Retrograde let us take a look at the symbolism of the planet Mars and the sign of Scorpio. A retrograde is a time of all things “re”; review, re-look, rethink etc…Mars is the planet of action so when it retrogrades we are re-looking at how we take action. Mars represents our will power, it’s from where and how we take action. Mars is the courage and confidence to act and create our lives.
Scorpio very much represents the inner and unseen realms. It’s our feelings, our intuitions and those gut knowings. Often times this energy does not make logical sense and so themes of trust are brought to the table during these transits. Scorpio ultimately is about transformation; something changing from one thing to another. In a way we are all transforming however in order to thrive though this process one must trust that everything is in fact working out perfectly; even if it looks like all in crumbling down.
More than anything else this Mars retrograde is asking up to act on our truths and follow our intuitions. We have all learned a lot about ourselves in the last 3.5 years; now it’s time to implement this wisdom. It’s a time to allow the shedding to occur, to completely let go of the old and hold space for a rebirth that is occurring.
Instead of taking the stance that you are at this alone, it is a time to embrace that you are part of a larger plan. By aligning your individual willpower with the divine’s plan you not only take the pressure off of yourself but you are being a part of the master shift occurring now on Earth. Before acting, take a deep breath and check in with your feelings/intuitions. Listen and then take action. More than anything else be open to change and transformation; trusting that if something is ending it is because something better is being born.
Here are some dates/guidelines for this Mars retrograde:
February 17th – April 16th: Mars is in the retrograde area (or shadow). Notice how you take action during this time period. Take inventory of what you know to be true and what it means to act on that truth. However Mars is going to retrograde over this area creating a sort of review. Know that what unfolds during this time may change later for the better.
April 17th-June 29th: Mars is retrograde. Things may get wonky and it’s not a time to force or push your way through life. Instead trust the process and continue to explore your inner truths. Notice how these may change. Allow everything to unfold in it’s own time. Changes are opportunities to learn so be open to the transformation in order to receive from it.
June 29th-August 21st: Mars begins to move forward. However during this time it will be doing a final review and wrapping up the lessons. The key here is to trust yourself and what you have learned. Begin to implement this learning into your life.
August 22nd: Mars leave retrograde zone, Green light! Everything will start to move forward if it has not already. A new you is born. Share yourself with the world!

Transformation, gut feelings, and talk about things looking like they would crumble down (I hung on and trusted my gut instinct) – all this happened during the shadow period. My soon to be husband and partner of 13 years is a Scorpio rising 3rd decan Sag with Aries moon and I am a Taurus rising 3rd decan Gemini with Leo moon. We are finally marrying this summer, right before the Solstice full moon. I had wanted to make sure this retrograde wouldn’t be a negative for us, and it isn’t. With everything we’ve just been through, we’re stronger than ever, and this Mars retrograde looks good for us, symbolic even. I am hopeful and encouraged more than ever than our stars and planets are aligned where they need to be and that the cosmos is giving us a beautiful time ahead, at least until the next Mercury rx 😉
