When I set out to record my new music video, “Man On Wire,” I never expected the perspective shift it would give me. I had no idea that the experience would have such an impact on how I see the world.
As I songwriter, it’s my job to tap into emotion and cut to the core of the human experience. It’s my goal to communicate and connect authentically with other people through my songs. It was an eye-opener to realize how quickly I lose that intention in day to day routine. You don’t have to create some epic piece of artwork to inspire someone. A simple, unexpected smile from a stranger can do the trick.
Shot over a single day in Hamburg, Germany, “Man On Wire” tells the story of a man that has reached the end of his rope, an outcast that has all but given up on life.
In order to fully immerse myself in character, I dressed as a street performer, and wandered through the city to play for anyone that would listen. Most people ignored me and kept their distance, unable to see past my appearance. At one point, I bought a bouquet of flowers to pass out to strangers, and even this simple act was met with suspicion and apprehension by many.
We all want to be appreciated and noticed. It took dressing up in a clown costume to realize that we all wear costumes every day, longing for someone to see through them and connect with who we are underneath. “Man On Wire” is about taking that first step towards acceptance and ultimately, freedom.
