Presence: Theme for 2016

Let presence be the theme for 2016. In the front cover of the book “Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle, you will see this sentence by Oprah Winfrey “MORE JOY, RIGHT NOW!”  Wouldn’t you want more joy in your life?

As a life coach, it is almost of innate nature for me to stay present at all time as it is only by being present that I can truly listen to my students.  By listening, it makes it natural for me to identify what’s blocking them from their happiness and to guide them accordingly. A lot of people misunderstood being present as just being there but it is more than that.  When I say present, I mean 100% being in the NOW: my mind, body & soul is only focused on now and not what’s coming up next.

By now, many of you would think, so what’s the point of being present? Let me share with you the 3 power of being present:

1. You “bend time”

Yes, this sounds ridiculous to many of you. However, when we are truly present, we are giving our 100% to the matter at hand and hence we are highly efficient. In my recent chat with a fellow coach, I told him that I had written for hours and hours. And he asked me, “How many hours?” When I checked the clock, it was only 1 hour. Yes, that is how much time I have saved, or I choose to call it “bent”! This is essentially what people term as laser sharp focus.

2. Expanded awareness

When we are present, we heightened all our senses.  With increased awareness, everything is crystal clear to us. On problem solving perspective, this means that we get to the root cause of the problem easily and creating solution becomes easy-peasy. On the creative end, this allows ideas and inspiration to flow easily.

3. More Joy

When we are only looking at now, there is no problem now. Most of the problems are our worries, fears and anxieties about the future which are False Evidence Appearing Real. If we are in the NOW, there is no problem. There is only situation which may require our attention to it. Relax; I know you are screaming in your head, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!”  Well, when you are planning for the future, you are doing it now, isn’t it? Furthermore, what truly matter is to take action NOW.

Now that you’ve understood the power of being present, let me end this article with 1 simple tip. Let’s start practicing being in the presence by being aware of what you see, smell, hear, touch and feel. Or, just simply be aware of your breath (inhale and exhale) as many times as you can in a day. You will be amazed at the results! It is really that easy.
