If you read my article on “3 Practices That Will Change Your Life” you’ll know that I’m all about cultivating a private little corner of your world just for you!  A “sacred space” aka a place for your spiritual life, a place to go for help, solace, prayer, to manifest dreams, send love to others or to give thanks – a mini oasis of sorts where you can disconnect from the everyday world and make sense of an insane life. I love utilizing my sacred space as part of my morning ritual.  It’s something that sets the pace of my day.

It should be a place away from active areas of your home (entrance, kid’s playroom, etc) And it definitely should be someplace you feel comfortable – a place where it feels safe to be vulnerable. A sacred space should be really personal, somewhere you can tap into your higher self – a place that helps leave the day behind, diffuses stress and creates positivity.  Think of it as an anchor that represents our intentions. Here’s a quick primer to inspire you:

A sacred space should be:

Simple

Pleasing

Decorative

Inspire Spirituality, but not necessarily religion

Soothing and calming with meditative qualities

Some items to include:

3 tea candles to represent the Three Jewels (Buddhist) or Holy Trinity (Catholicism)

Representation of Universal Expression – i.e. Buddha, Dharma Wheel, Mudra Hand, Lotus Flower or Natural Elements such as a rock, shell

Things of beauty that fill you with happiness – a trinket that inspires you, a photograph that makes you recall a simple pleasure or loved one

Flowers, cards, letters – items you feel a deep connection to

Spiritual symbols – candles, charms or incense

Something that represents your “essential self”

Representations of the 5 Elements:

Earth – crystals, stones, sand or wood

Fire – candles

Water – purified or holy water or shells

Metal – singing bowl

Air – incense, sage or a feather

Various color candles to draw in different energies

white – purity, always burned first

green – money, growth, bring abundance beginnings, healing

blue  – harmony, peace, spirituality

yellow – intelligence, clarity in thinking, inspiration – burn when seeking clarity to problems

orange – energy, give energy to other candles

red – intense energy, sex, passion – potent

pink – love, harmony romance, happiness

black – deep cleansing – NOT evil or negative, burn when intense negative energy needs clearing

white & black together to cleanse and negativity , illness

brown – grounding

purple – spiritual growth, invokes guides, higher power, keeps bad/negative people away

How to get started:

Begin by facing EAST as this is the direction of new beginnings – next, set an intention – it can be for abundance, healing, manifestation, etc. Finally, honor your spirituality and give thanks to the greatest spirit, your guides, angels and higher self.

Recharge by space clearing

Light a lamp or candle

Burn incense

Offer flowers

Ring bells

Chant

You’ve now created your place of refuge, an oasis, a sanctuary a place of connection and devotion.
